Tenth Anniversary Scholarship Fund Campaign

The cost of a U of T education has risen dramatically since the Hong Kong Scholarships were launched in 1996. For the tenth anniversary year, the Foundation board has launched a campaign to raise the value of the flagship scholarship from CDN$21,000 to CDN$30,000 per annum and keep the door to a U of T education open to Hong Kong’s most deserving students. This critical campaign will not be possible without the support of the larger U of T community in Hong Kong.

The staff at the University of Toronto (Hong Kong) Foundation office would be pleased to answer your questions about how your tax-deductible donation will support future Hong Kong Scholars at UofT. Please contact Mr. Jeremy Woodall at tel. (852) 2375-8258 or by email at ask@utoronto.com.hk. The Foundation is a registered charity with the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department. All donations over HK$100 to the scholarship fund are eligible for a charity tax receipt.

When it was first awarded in 1996, the University of Toronto (Hong Kong) Foundation Scholarship was the most comprehensive scholarship for Hong Kong students from any Canadian university. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends in Hong Kong, the scholarship provided over 90% of the total cost of each year of study, putting the scholarship on par with the support offered by Harvard, MIT, Oxford and other global leaders. The demand from Hong Kong students was exceptional, and by 1998, there were two hundred responses to the Foundation's annual promotional activities.

As the University of Toronto grew and developed over the last ten years, new facilities and faculty members brought the University global profile as a leader in research and teaching. With this growth, the annual cost of education has increased dramatically. The Foundation Scholarship is no longer sufficient to support a student with high family financial need, and some deserving applicants must be turned away.

To raise the value of the scholarship to its historic level, the Foundation has committed to raising a minimum of HK$10 million. The campaign was launched with generous leadership donations from Dr. Patrick Y.B. Fung and family, Mrs. Daisy Ho, Mr. William Doo, and members of the Foundation board. The Foundation now seeks the support of alumni and friends in Hong Kong in its mission to provide access to the very best of Canadian education.
