Celebrating Ten Years of Exceptional Scholars

"Stepping onto the St. George Campus in September 2003," says Cheng Yu-tung Scholar Janice Sin, "I knew this was a place where I could push my limits."

The fourth-year University College student took this idea to heart, and made her time at the University of Toronto a first step towards a truly international experience. Sin spent her third year on exchange at the University of Freiburg, where she studied Social anthropology in German - her fourth language. After a summer internship at a non-governmental organization in Switzerland, Sin has returned to U of T with a first-hand appreciation of global issues

Before a high school teacher told her about the Hong Kong Scholarships, Sin had never imagined attending an overseas university. She is very thankful for the support of the scholarship, saying that "it has laid a foundation on which I can go far beyond what I thought possible".

Harriet Chu, the recipient of this year's University of Toronto (Hong Kong) Foundation Scholarship, is discovering that university is about more than just textbooks and lectures.

"I have learned much more than I thought I would when I first applied for the scholarship" admits Chu, who has enrolled in the challenging performance program at the Faculty of Music, specializing in the euphonium. "University life is truly an eye-opening experience. It is interesting to meet people from all over the world and know more about their cultures."

As one of the few students in Hong Kong to achieve near-perfect scores in her A-Level examinations, Chu shows that she has talent to spare. She is inspired by the range of programs offered, and excited to see where her U of T education will take her.

Chu is indebted to the University of Toronto (Hong Kong) Foundation for the support of the Foundation Scholarship in allowing her to pursue an education at the University of Toronto.

For a recent graduate, Calvin Lau is a remarkably busy young man. Only a few months have passed since Lau received his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Michael's College, but he is already helping to create the next generation of antibiotic drugs as a PhD candidate in pharmacology at the University of Cambridge.

Lau credits receiving the Dr. Lee Shau Kee University of Toronto Scholarship as a turning point in his life. Says Lau, "I was given the opportunity to study at a leading university, and was introduced to the international academic world."

At Cambridge, Lau's research will focus on ways to combat antibiotic resistance among the latest generation of 'super bugs.' He is most grateful to be among the inaugural recipients of the Dr. Lee Shau Kee University of Toronto Scholarship, which has given him a head start in his lifelong commitment to medical science.
